Here are the best stories I have about Kinesiotape. This is the colourful tape used on athletes and non-athletes by Kinesiologists, Chiropractors and Physiotherapists.
I love Kinesiotape. I have been using it since taking the course in March. Kinesio Tex Tape, is what I use. It is similar to Kinesiology tape, KT tape or Rock tape. All of these are what is known as elastic therapeutic muscle tape.
As a personal trainer, I find it very useful for many things. I use it to help assist with both rehabilitation goals as well as fitness goals. Here are some of the things I am using Kinesio Tape for.
This is a picture of my wife’s feet after a long day in heels. I also did this tape job on her a lot when she was pregnant. I cut the tape so I can spread it across her foot. The goal is to create a checkerboard type pattern. Sometimes I just do one strip although it is better with two strips. This is a popular tape job for sprained ankles. It encourages circulation.
If you have any questions about whether or not this tape does anything, this should answer your question. Taping on top of a bruise helps to lift the skin and increase circulation. I did this tape job on someone who took a hockey puck to the leg. This was 5 days after I put the tape on. You can see where the tape was, the bruise is now gone. Where I chose not to put tape, the bruise looks way worse. This is awesome!!
I taped up my sister-in-law when she was having some elbow pain. The pain was on the lateral side of her arm that was being made worse while painting. Knowing her, she really wanted to keep painting and finish the job! So, I taped her up to give her a little help with wrist extension. I also put a “space correction” over the area of pain. She was so happy about it she drove back a week later to have me do it again.
I do this tape job a lot. I find a combination of Thoracic spine extension and shoulder retraction works very well. The tape pulls gently on people, especially when they start to slouch. This is a good que, or reminder, to hold good posture. It isn’t the type of thing you need to put on for the rest of your life. I find, the tape acts as a reminder to use your postural muscles. After one or two applications, your behaviour will have changed and you will naturally hold better posture.
Some people have seen awesome results. Others don’t see any effect. Some people get a skin reaction to the tape. If you get itching or burning it is time to take it off. The tape usually lasts 3-5 days. The good thing is, if someone doesn’t like it, all you need to do is peel it off. There really isn’t a downside to giving it a try.
Want to learn more about what it is and how it works? I will leave that answer to the kinesio tex tape people, they know it best. Check out there website for tons more info http://kinesiotape.ca/
